Com o regresso da emigração ao quotidiano português, tornou-se manifesto que o fenómeno adquiriu contornos diferentes em comparação às vagas de emigrantes anteriores. Esta investigação centrou-se nos portugueses residentes na Áustria e procurou descrever o comportamento da língua portuguesa em contacto com as diferentes línguas estrangeiras com as quais convive em contexto austríaco e as consequências daí decorrentes. Por exemplo, em que medida há interferências de outras línguas, quais as estratégias dos falantes para gerir as suas competências linguísticas, quais as áreas mais permeáveis a transferências, etc. Como se trata de uma comunidade recente e não muito numerosa, os fenómenos linguísticos puderam ser observados ainda numa fase inicial.
