I am just an ordinary run-of-the mill garden variety citizen of the Philippines, born a Catholic, and born of a middleclass family of modest means. My maternal grandfather was a revolutionary against Spain who was our colonial master for 350 years, and against the United States who was also our colonial master for the next 50 years. My grandfather became a politician, once mayor of his town, then governor of his province, then a congressman, an assemblyman and eventually a senator. My parents were educated in the United States; my father with 4 engineering degrees, became an industrialist; my mother with a Home Economics degree, became a businesswoman, a suffragist, and the President of the National Federation of Women's Clubs.
