Synopsis "Ozone Therapy and Its Implication in Periodontics"
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by the initiation of the microorganisms and progression of the host further leading to the destruction of the periodontium. Subgingival microorganisms differ concerning their oxygen sensitivity and tolerance to the toxic effects of oxygen. The use of ozone is a new option for irrigating agents with antimicrobial action without developing resistance which results from the oxidation of microbial cellular components. The aqueous ozone reveals a high level of biocompatibility to fibroblasts, cementoblasts, and epithelial cells. Ozone, in a gaseous or aqueous form, is effective in removing biofilm. Ozone therapy has been more beneficial than present conventional therapeutic modalities that follow a minimally invasive and conservative application to dental treatment. Ozone is a promising treatment modality for various dental problems in the future. But presently ozone is an adjunct to other conventional treatment modalities and should be used in combination. Its unique properties include immunostimulant, analgesic, antihypnotic, detoxicating, antimicrobial, bioenergetic and biosynthetic actions.
