Justamente el Japón feudal de poco antes de la Restauración Meiji estaba dividido en dos bandos: los patriotas que estaban a gusto con el shogunato de Tokugawa y los revolucionarios.Dentro de los primeros existió un grupo de samurais que intentaban mantener el orden dentro de la ciudad de Kyoto, los lobos de Mibu: el Shinsengumi. Toda la historia de este manga gira en torno a este grupo, y se centra especialmente en Tetsunosuke, un chaval desesperado por cobrar venganza por la muerte de su padre, y por encontrar su lugar en el mundo después de tan desgraciado suceso.
