Synopsis "Performance Evaluation of Garlic Bulb Breaker"
A mortar and pestle are needed to crack open a garlic bulb. This study evaluated a machine recently purchased by farmers to separate garlic cloves. The garlic bulb breaker was tested at 260, 390, and 520 rpm and 144, 180, and 240 kg/h. All data was analysed using standard statistical procedures. Wet base moisture content ranged from 58.55 to 66.27 percent. Our garlic cloves averaged 0.524 g/cc, with a range of 0.517-0.535 g/cc. Cylinder speed and feed rate affect single-clove separation. At 390 rpm, the cylinder's clove separation efficiency was 73.3%. The machine produced 163.80 kg/h at 240 kg/h at 390 rpm. Feed rates above 180 kg/h and speeds above 390 rpm increased clumps of 4-6 cloves. This study found that using the garlic bulb breaker at 390 rpm and 180 kg/h produced the fewest 2-3 and 4-6 clove clumps and broken cloves.
