Indien hat weltweit die grö te Anbaufläche für Paddy und steht bei der Produktion an zweiter Stelle nach China. Ein Fünftel der Weltbevölkerung, d.h. mehr als eine Milliarde Menschen, lebt vom Reisanbau. Die weltweite Paddy-Anbaufläche stieg von 1.32.655 Tausend Hektar im Jahr 1970 auf 1.58.913 Tausend Hektar im Jahr 2011, während die Produktivität von 2,36 Tonnen/ha auf 4,36 Tonnen/ha anstieg. In dem 2011 zu Ende gegangenen Triennium lag Indien mit einer Anbaufläche von 43.183 Tausend Hektar weltweit an der Spitze der paddyanbauenden Länder. Auf Indien entfallen mehr als 75 Prozent des Welthandels mit Reis. Die von der Regierung angekündigten Mindeststützungspreise wirken sich deutlich auf den Marktpreis der landwirtschaftlichen Erzeugnisse aus. Die Regierung hatte den Mindeststützungspreis für Paddy im Laufe der Jahre erhöht. Die Ergebnisse des Granger-Kausalitätstests zeigten, dass die internationalen Preise für Nicht-Basmati-Reis in Thailand die Preise aller ausgewählten Märkte in Indien, nämlich Nizamabad, Suryapet, Sindhanur und Maddur, beeinflussten, aber nicht umgekehrt. Die Ergebnisse der ARCH-GARCH-Analyse zeigten, dass die Paddy-Preise in allen ausgewählten Märkten mehr oder weniger stabil waren.
