Die Untersuchung rekonstruiert diesen Gegensatz anhand von horizontbildenden Darstellungen. Sie schlägt von dem antiken produktionsästhetischen Konflikt (Platon/Aristoteles) eine Brücke zum Erfahrungshorizont der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft. Das Verhältnis von Kunst und Arbeit wird u.a. in den Schriften von Kant, Schiller, Hegel, Nietzsche und der Avantgarde des 20. Jahrhunderts untersucht. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden die literaturdidaktischen Strömungen von der Jahrhundertwende bis zur Gegenwart beleuchtet.
