Synopsis "Rangeland Management: Profiles of Federal Grazing Program Permittees: Rced-86-203fs"
In response to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) grazing program to provide information on permittees with grazing privileges on public lands, specifically: (1) where the permittees reside in relation to the public land on which their livestock graze; and (2) whether the permittees are individuals, partnerships or corporations. GAO found that, of the permittees with grazing privileges on public lands: (1) 76 percent are individuals; (2) 11 percent are corporations; (3) 8 percent are partnerships; (4) 91 percent own base property; and (5) 8 percent lease base property. GAO also found that: (1) more than 80 percent of both permittees and owners of base property are local residents; and (2) permittees residing either within 100 miles of the base property or within the same state hold 95 percent of the permits.
