Synopsis "Romantic relationships and body image"
Sexual objectification is perhaps the most persistent form of gender discrimination against women, ultimately factoring into many of the other types of oppression that women face, such as sexual violence and employment discrimination (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997). Believed to be the root of self-objectification (Sanchez & Broccoli,2008), sexual objectification occurs when a woman's body or body parts are singled out and separated from her as an overall person, leading her to be viewed primarily as a physical object for the sake of sexual desire (Bartky, 1990). Grounded in patriarchy, the dominant characteristic of sexual objectification is the reduction of women to the physical parts of their bodies, for the opinions, desires, and interests of an outside individual (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997).
