Same Light, Many Candles: Working With Vulnerable Children and Mothers Within Toxically Stressed Communities
Carol Cole
Synopsis "Same Light, Many Candles: Working With Vulnerable Children and Mothers Within Toxically Stressed Communities"
Against powerful negative socio-economic forces, Sophia Project empowered many traumatized children and their mothers to transform their lives. Sophia Project’s families call to mind the Igbo and Yoruba proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” The educators dedicated to supporting Sophia Project are examples of Margaret Mead’s famous statement: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Founded and directed by Carol Cole and her husband David Barlow, Sophia Project (1999-2014) was dedicated to Camphill ideals and to the Waldorf early childhood approach. The project served over a hundred children and their mothers, all of whom were at risk of recurring homelessness and, frequently, abuse. After five years in the program none of these families returned to homelessness or abusive situations. All of the children went on to perform well in elementary school, high school, and college. In Same Light, Many Candles, Carol Cole tells the inspiring story of this successful project. Robert McDermott Chair, Board of Trustees, Sophia Project Author, Steiner and Kindred Spirits
