Synopsis "Shams: The Queen of the Sea"
1474, Granada, Andalusia. Shams, the beautiful, headstrong daughter of Moulay Hassan's vizier, is determined to follow her heart while trying to satisfy the expectations of those around her. In the years leading up to the fall of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada, she lives a quiet life, finding quotidien fulfilment as a mother and doctor. Against the backdrop of the displacement and destruction of a civilisation, Shams finds herself sailing the Mediterranean, visiting Mamluk Egypt, Italy, Greece, the Ottoman court and the Maghrib, in a story of undying love, loss, tragedy and hope. As the Nasrid kingdom of Granada crumbles and refugees flee her homeland, Shams doesn't know what will become of her, her family and the people of her beloved Andalusia. With its themes of persecution at the junctions of civilisations and the unravelling of centuries-old ways of life, this story holds up the mirror of 15th century Spain for us to contemplate.
