Brigit Barrasford, a lovely young woman haunted by voices and visions outside the bounds of ordinary life, struggles to come to terms with her unusual powers in a romantic adventure that spans the late 1930s through World War II. As a lonely child growing up on the Isle of Man in the care of an unloving aunt, Brigit turns to her imaginary friend Michael for companionship. When Brigit immigrates to America in her teens to live with an uncle in Boston, she feels as if she has left Michael behind forever. But when she begins to work with psychic researchers, Michael emerges as her control, identifying himself as the spirit of a Druid priest who lived and died many centuries past. Gifted with ancient wisdom and brought to life by their spiritual connection, Michael becomes more and more real as he guides Brigit through her daring, dangerous war work and the heartaches of her personal life. In order for the time-crossed couple to consummate their deep love, Michael takes spiritual possession of an officer in the OSS. Brigit and Michael spend an idyllic time together in war-ravaged England until he must return to the frontlines. The story of Brigit and Michael's ageless love is bracketed by the journey of Brigit's daughter, Michelle, an archeologist, as she slowly becomes aware of her own unique heritage while she excavates Michael's cairn on the Isle of Man.
