They cause him to lose a job, beat him brutally, try to set him up to return him to prison, and then ultimately run him out of town. After a while of escaping on the Appalachian Trail, he called settle in a small town - Shannon, Tennessee. There he attempts to build a new life, always in fear that the past will find him.
