Apesar dos consideráveis progressos nas técnicas operacionais e equipamentos auxiliares para o encaixe das próteses totais de joelho (TKP), a gestão do tamanho das peças protéticas nem sempre foi óbvia. O tamanho ideal ainda é mal dominado pelos cirurgiões e mal controlado pelos fabricantes de próteses. Muitas vezes há super ou sub-dimensionamento em comparação com o joelho nativo. A situação em que o tamanho anteroposterior da patela e/ou do fémur é aumentado após a inserção de um GTP é chamada de apinhamento patelofemoral (PFE). Mais de 75% dos pacientes tinham PFE. Embora esta seja uma ocorrência comum, tem sido pouco estudada na literatura. As consequências funcionais do congestionamento patelofemoral não foram elucidadas e continuam a ser controversas.O objetivo deste livro foi determinar a influência do PFE no resultado funcional da artroplastia total do joelho (TKR).
