Synopsis "The Aventures of Sherlock Holmes (illustrated)"
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and featuring his famous private detective. The original book was illustrated by Sidney Paget. These are the first adventures of Sherlock Holmes. They were originally published in Strand Magazine between July 1891 and June 1892. The book was published in England on 14 October 1892 by publisher George Newnes Ldt. The initial circulation was 14,500 copies. The book was banned in the Soviet Union in 1929 for occultism even though the book shows no trace of such a theme. Summary: The king of Bohemia comes to find Sherlock Holmes to entrust him with a business: he will soon marry a prude princess but an old love, Irene Adler, threatens to fail everything by publishing a photo of them both. Sherlock Holmes invents a stratagem to get to Irene to see where the photo is: he makes believe a fire knowing she will seek to save her most expensive panic - the picture. Finally, she manages to escape with the photo but assures the king that she is in love with another man and that she will not harm him. This is one of the rare times when Sherlock Holmes fails.
