Synopsis "The Children's Jungle: One Treatment Foster Care Mother's Story of Loving Some of the Most Difficult Children in the Country"

The Children's Jungle is the story of Catherine Slusher and her experience in the Treatment Foster Care System in Milwaukee, WI, specifically in regards to Johnny and Cassie. Johnny suffered severe abuse at the hands of his previous guardians and was removed from their care. He entered the Treatment Foster Care System, a system for children that have suffered great trauma or have disabilities that need a special kind of foster home. Catherine"s story describes a great deal of the "fine print" that most people do not know about. She masterfully explains her story with the children from two points of view. The first point of view being that she is a Family Counselor and Nurse, and the second point of view is that of being a mother to these unwanted children. Catherine exposes the huge flaws in the system of Treatment Foster Care. The details that she provides create a clear path so that anyone with a heart and open eyes can see how we are preparing children for a life of crime and institutionalization. This is a book that anyone who cares about the future of our country, the children being our future, needs to read. It is a book that will pull people into action to save our future by saving our children. One could categorize The Children's Jungle into many categories. However, it is my belief that this book is not niche book. This is a book for anyone and everyone that cares for the future of our world. Someday we will be old and these children will be the ones taking care of us. It is with this mind set that amending the current system of Treatment Foster Care is a civil rights issue. After reading The Children's Jungle, I am sure that some of the prisoners of war are treated with more care and dignity under the Geneva Convention than our children in Treatment Foster Care. Catherine shows us that by learning the flaws of the systems currently in place are the only way to find the solutions. This book will surely put anyone with a heart into action.
