Synopsis "The Leadership Paradox: Becoming Great Through Service"

Dr. Flattery bases this book on Matthew 20:20-28 which tells the story of Jesus interacting with the disciples about greatness and leadership. He points out that this story brings into focus several major leadership issues. In Jesus' teaching on the central issue, He drew a sharp contrast between rulers that stress authority and leaders that emphasize service. Many servant leaders have authority, but they make service paramount. According to Dr. Flattery, the overarching message of Matthew's story is that service is the indispensable element in great leadership. While making this point, Jesus addressed His remarks to whoever would be great. Paradoxically, the one who wants to be great must be the servant of all. Similarly, the paradox of leadership is that leaders become great through service. Jesus does not rebuke the desire to be great, but He shows the way. Service rather than authority has the priority.
