This signaled the beginning of the Cambodian civil war-as well as the atrocities and genocide by dictator Pol Pot's communist regime. In this memoir, Albert provides the perspective of a young boy who witnessed the brutal Khmer Rouge in action and who suffered under the communists. Their actions not only devastated the adults living under the regime but also the children who were robbed of the opportunity to go to school. Many Cambodians fled their country and became refugees in Thailand. Many of them never returned home. But with determination, perseverance, a positive attitude, hard work, and some luck, some of these refugees found the chance to start a new life.
