Synopsis "This Little Light of Mine"

Seventeen-year-old Oscar Petersen is a small-town Kentucky boy with few ambitions in life other than graduating high school. (If he doesn't, he'll break his mama's heart.) Unfortunately, his school work takes a backseat to his rebellious shenanigans in this wry coming-of-age story set in the pre-sexual revolution era of the early Sixties. When his senior year begins, Oscar's world is already in shambles. His parents' marriage is on the rocks. His girlfriend might as well live on another planet, for how much he sees her. To make matters worse, he's still reeling from the death of his sister. To cope, Oscar begins acting out. Alongside his buddy Howard "Flub" Curries, Oscar becomes embroiled in one mess after another. A simple trip to the grocery store ends with Oscar losing his mom's loot to an emaciated pool hustler. A small-time prank on a local rich kid ends with a car in the deep end of a public pool. And a war of words with one of his teachers escalates into a full-blown feud that threatens Oscar's graduation plans. In the tradition of classic coming-of-age stories like Catcher In the Rye and Huckleberry Finn, This Little Light of Mine strikes a balance between high drama and laugh-out-loud humor. This debut novel will take readers back to a bygone era of cherry bombs and Cherry Cokes, when a little mischief and mayhem went a long ways.
