Narra la historia del joven gaditano Gabriel de Araceli, que a los 14 años se ve envuelto en la batalla de Trafalgar como criado de un viejo oficial de la Armada en la reserva. La novela cuenta uno de los sucesos históricos más importantes de todos los Episodios Nacionales, la batalla de Trafalgar, como el nombre de la novela indica. Galdós narra con maestría los preliminares de la batalla, además de aportar importantes datos sobre la armada española, el transcurso de esta y sucesos posteriores, ciñéndose en todo momento a la realidad.
