Jharkhand is one of the eastern states in India having largest tribal population. Garhwa district of Jharkhand is one among the twenty four districts in the state having sizeable tribal population and large scheduled area. The tribal communities in the district represent different levels of socio-economic development. Though both Central and State Governments have implemented number of programmes for the development of tribal, they have not yet reached the expected level of development. Tribal women in Jharkhand have to go a long way to attain the empowerment in real sense that is in political, economic, social and cultural field. In rural areas, tribal women are generally not taken seriously to change their socio economic status, tribal women need development not welfare, empowerment not assistance, entitlement not assistance and social and gender justice. The present study explores whether tribal women are enjoying their rights or not. The study also examines the steps taken by to improve the education and health status of the tribal women in general and in particular to meet the challenges of the world.
