When the newly elected president of the small Mediterranean island of Lemalia is gunned down it sets off a chain of events that reshapes the geopolitical landscape. Mohann Aldessa was Lemalia's first democratically elected president in years before his life is cut short by an assassin's bullet. As the world's major source of the wonder metal, Duritium, Lemalia is thrown into political turmoil as a result of Aldessa's murder.Aldessa's assassination leads to a power vacuum that his opponent, Emerante Legaud, fills by assuming the presidency by default. Meanwhile the U.S. government launches its first superhuman defense initiative, Vigil. The team is led by Captain Alicia Conrad, a decisive leader with a painful past and mysterious family history. Counted among the other members are: Cynthia Fighting Bull, a cavalier CIA agent with a huge chip on her shoulder; Terrell Morrison, a by-the-book born again Secret Service agent; Aaron Blankenchip, a gruff soldier who is a technical genius; and John Arrowhawk, a cocky FBI agent with more confidence in his investigative abilities than his superhuman ones. When Vigil embarks on its first assignment they learn the truth behind their original purpose. This revelation leads them on a direct collision course with the clandestine organization known only as the Network. Ultimately this conflict intersects with the events surrounding Aldessa's murder. Through this journey each member of the team is taken to their emotional and physical limit, and leads them to question everything they believe about responsibility and power.
