Bei der derzeit führenden Technologie zur Erzeugung von Wasserstoff in gro en Mengen, der Dampf-Methan-Reformierung, wird Wasserstoff aus Methan gewonnen. Bei dieser Reaktion werden jedoch fossiles Kohlendioxid und Kohlenmonoxid in die Atmosphäre freigesetzt, bei denen es sich um Treibhausgase handelt, die nicht zum natürlichen Kohlenstoffkreislauf gehören und somit zum Klimawandel beitragen. Bei der Elektrolyse wird Strom durch Wasser geleitet, um die Wasserstoff- und Sauerstoffatome zu trennen. Bei dieser Methode können Wind, Sonne, Erdwärme, Wasser, fossile Brennstoffe, Biomasse, Kernkraft und viele andere Energiequellen genutzt werden. Die Gewinnung von Wasserstoff aus diesem Verfahren wird als praktikabler Weg untersucht, um ihn im Inland zu geringen Kosten zu produzieren.
