Synopsis "Who am i? A True Story From a Survivor of the Notorious Tennessee Children's Home Society"
For twenty-five years, from 1925 until 1950, the Memphis branch of the Tennessee Children's Home Society, managed by Miss Georgia Tann, illegally marketed children to unknowing adoptive parents. Some of the children were snatched from the streets of Memphis, others kidnapped along the banks of the Mississippi River, some were stolen from hospital maternity wards, and many were surrendered by the juvenile court system. Georgia Tann was a member of the elite society of Memphis. She was described as doing "God's work" taking children from impoverished homes and families and supplying well-to-do patrons with youngsters of their own to have and to hold. Tann's behavior was aided and abated by the city's mayor, court judges, hospital nurses, and corrupt attorneys.Over five thousand children passed through the "orphanage" during Miss Tann's reign. It's estimated that as many as five-hundred perished due to abuse or neglect. Harry Gordon was one of the fortunate survivors, and Who Am I? is his story.
