The story opens in Liverpool, 1946, where Billy Garrity a twelve year old boy has become aware that he has the power. What it is he has no idea, but he is able to contrive the movement of objects, including humans. After running away he uses the power for revenge. He is befriended by a street merchant who sees him as a method to make money and after the man insists on a demonstration of the power, they meet with a tragic end...the power lives on...
