Criticism of Atheism and Materialism
Mujica Johnson, Felipe Nicolás
Synopsis "Criticism of Atheism and Materialism"
This essay first discusses some negative consequences of atheism and materialism, a philosophical ideology that denies metaphysical arguments and believes that, ultimately, the universe is founded on matter itself. In particular, I defend the thesis that atheism distances human beings from the value of humility and brings them closer to pride in their own being. Therefore, in the opposite sense, I will point out that belief in God is an idea that par excellence brings people closer to humility. It therefore moves people away from pride of self. Second, I reflect critically on the idea that believers base their belief on the fear of death and its possibility of disappearing. Specifically, I will explain that this is a very shallow and reductionist idea of what grounds belief in God.
