Synopsis "Cudjo Fye's Insurrection"

One of the greatest sensations of the period happened in Jefferson County, Georgia in 1870. Cudjo Fye's Insurrection is a book about the fortitude and courage of an ex-slave who dared to stand up for his rights of personhood and the right to vote. He lived through the most important era in the history of our nation-the rights of African Americans after slavery. This book is not presented as a historical time line of events but a document of events and voices from the past as the nation abolished slavery, streaming down to events in the State with a newly elected Governor Rufus Bullock. Cudjo Fye was a Union League leader in Louisville, he educated men regarding their rights to vote an their rights as freed men and women. It appears that it was a perfect storm of events happening in the state and local communities with KKK involvement..By March 1871 after the arrest, trial and conviction of Cudjo Fye and the other Union League members Ulysses S. Grant, President of the United States recommended legislation to secure life, liberty, and property, and the enforcement of law in all parts of the United States. In pursuance of this recommen-dation, "An act to enforce the provisions of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, and for other purposes," was passed, and approved April 20, 1871. This joint committee was appointed, the Senate of the United States convened whose duty it was be to inquire into the condition of the late insurrectionary States, so far as regards the execution of the laws and the safety of the lives and property of the citizens of the United States.Testimonies were taken from men regarding the events in the state, locally and regarding the insurrection and the Ku-Klux Klan involvement.
