Der polnische Schriftsteller Stanislaw Przybyszewsk war Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts einer der führenden Köpfe der Berliner Literaturszene. Die Werke, die er in dieser Zeit schuf, hatten gro en Einfluss auf Autoren wie Richard Dehmel und August Strindberg. Aus der Berliner Schaffensperiode stammt auch die Erzählung "De Profundis". Sie spiegelt Przybyszewskis Interesse wider für die "rätselhafte, geheimnisvolle Manifestation der Seele mit all ihren Begleiterscheinungen, dem Fieber, der Vision, den sogenannten psychotischen Zuständen" und weist zahlreiche Charakteristika der europäischen Décadence-Literatur auf.
