Bastian Scholz legt die erste diachrone, konfessionsvergleichende Analyse der staatspolitischen Haltungen beider christlicher Großkirchen in Deutschland vor. Er erörtert ihren Einfluss auf die Stabilität der politischen Systeme des 19., 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts sowie ihre Rolle während der staatlichen Umbrüche. Für Deutschlands Geschichte war die konfessionelle Spaltung der Bevölkerung ebenso schicksalhaft wie die Vielzahl von Systemtransformationen. Die katholische Kirche pflegte nach 1803 allgemeine Staatsdistanz, war opportunistische wie risikoscheue Wegbereiterin des Verfassungsstaates. Erst im Vaticanum II 1962-65 bekannte sie sich zur Demokratie. Die evangelische Kirche opponierte in Deutschland lange gegen die Demokratisierung und idealisierte die Monarchie bis zur Kirchenspaltung durch Hitler. Mit der Bundesrepublik erwies sich nur jenes System als stabil, das frühzeitig die Loyalität beider Konfessionen genoss.
