Synopsis "Extra Views: Incidental Findings at a Community Hospital"

Dr. Duncan has been a Radiologist at Wilno General Hospital for ten years. Most of his time and energy has been devoted to his position as the Director of the Computed Tomography (CT) department. Dr. Duncan's only desires are to work in a harmonious environment and to provide state of the art medical imaging to his referring physicians and their patients. However, a new hospital administration, led by Martin Gesso and George Gravy, has other plans for the health care providers. Their business model is to ration care in the pursuit of "cost containment". Gesso and Gravy have no use for physicians who do not embrace their cultural concept, according to which physicians are to become "providers" who do not treat patients, but rather provide "services" for health care "customers". Following their corporate model, Gesso and Gravy feel that the Executive Vice Presidents are entitled to their large salaries and bonuses as a reward for their success in cost containment, even as they fire nurses and deny resources to the radiology department. Based on real life experiences, Extra Views reveals the reasons why physicians are increasingly resorting to early retirement as the only escape from the oxymoron of "working harder, for less pay, with less autonomy, in order to improve patient care".
