Synopsis "Go in the Peace of Christ: A Comparative Analysis of the Conclusion to Christian Worship"
What is the origin of the blessing and dismissal in Christian worship? A great deal of study has been done on the development and meaning of the beginning of Christian worship. But, what about how it's concluded? What is the history and symbolism behind how Christian worship ends? Why do Christians end their worship the way they do? What is the the historical significance to roles of the ministers and the worshiping congregation in the conclusion of worship? What do we do after worship ends? These are questions that will be explored and answered in this work. This is a scholarly work intended to offer a detailed historical, theological, and comparative examination of the conclusion to the eucharistic celebration in three different liturgical traditions: (a) the ordinary form of the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church, (b) the Holy Communion Service of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and (c) the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom in the Orthodox Church. The reader can benefit from examining any one of the three liturgical traditions included here on its own, or reading the work as a whole to see what similarities and/or differences each major tradition has incorporated into it. The work is approx. 174 pages including a comparative chart showing the development of the conclusion through the ancient sources as well as in modern practice. An extensive works cited section completes the work as a resource for further study.
