Bei Keratose handelt es sich um eine Keratinproduktion auf der Haut oder Schleimhaut, die von Keratinozyten herrührt. Die lebenden Keratinozyten der tieferen Epidermis verwandeln sich in die toten Korneozyten der Hornschicht. Eine Vielzahl von Läsionen entstehen durch Mutationen im Gen, das für die verschiedenen Keratinproteine kodiert. Die hyperkeratotische Form OLP gehört ebenfalls zur fakultativen Krebsvorstufe. Die Ätiologie dieser Erkrankungen ist noch nicht vollständig geklärt.
