In Love in Fire and Blood, Alma Jaramillo, a young journalist based in the colonial city of Ávila in the Mexican state of Tepetlán, becomes involved in what could be the news story of the year: Jessica María, one of the country's most celebrated TV stars, has vanished. Hired by Jessica's husband to investigate her disappearance, Alma discovers a mysterious Spiritist cult and becomes entangled in the murky world of local politics and the dangerous business of kidnapping. In her search for Jessica, Alma is also forced to confront her own past and to embark on a surprising voyage of self-discovery.The novel opens a window into modern Mexico, its people and its expat community. It also highlights Alma's struggle to adjust to the country of her birth after spending twenty odds years as an undocumented immigrant in Los Angeles.
