The Irish sept of the name were located in the south of Co. Wexford, near to where the Vikings built the first town of Wexford. They owned extensive estates that were pilfered from them by the conquerors who came after the Vikings - the Normans and the English. In the middle of the 17th century their lands were finally taken and the Murphys began to scatter not alone throughout Ireland but throughout the world where many of them left their mark.
