He overcame an impoverished earlylife, social and economic difficulties for a young Black man in the early1900s in a small southern town, through systematic hard work, discipline, and tremendous faith. Notwithstanding a seventh grade formal education, Deacon Jones engaged in a continuous course of self-study-books, magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, religious conferences, etc. that were availableduring that time.
