Synopsis "Stones of Remembrance: Memoirs of a Holy Roller"
My title is from the Old Testament book of Joshua, chapter four. Israel, under Joshua's leadership, is at the edge of the raging Jordan river. God informs Joshua what he must do before God will act. Joshua obeys. God stops the flow of the Jordan, the water backs up and Israel marches across through the bare riverbed. After all are safely across Joshua orders a representative from each tribe to go back in the stream bed and select a stone, put in on his shoulder, and deposit it on the east shore. The twelve large stones will form a monument. Joshua explains its purpose: IN THE FUTURE, WHEN YOUR CHILDREN ASK YOU, 'WHAT DO THESE STONES MEAN?' TELL THEM THAT THE FLOW OF THE JORDAN WAS CUT OFF. THESE STONES ARE TO BE A MEMORIAL TO THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FOREVER." Joshua 4:6-8 "Memorial stones", "Stones of Remembrance." I have many of them in my memory bank. They are miracles that resulted when I dared to obey God when he gave me a command that seemed ridiculous or impossible. Miracles do follow obedience and produce trust. I have had four careers in which to test God's faithfulness. I served him as a Navy chaplain, perhaps my favorite career
