Synopsis "Terrorism versus Justice and Human Rights"
Today, terrorist organizations seek a higher death toll when launching an attack which makes terrorism a unique type of crime that is entirely different than the traditional ones. Therefore, the government response to terrorism threat is usually way harsher than any other crime. In this context, the way the governments fight terrorism and conduct the terror investigations becomes highly controversial. Some governments including the US adopted coercive interrogation techniques which applied to the suspected terrorists. However, human rights advocates vehemently criticized these methods calling them torture. During the last several decades, there has been an ongoing debate as to whether the suspected terrorists could be subjected to such coercive interrogation techniques or torture. By its nature, any counter-terrorism effort is inherently related to the national security and fundamental human rights. It is no doubt that the governments should ideally strike a balance between those two needs. The book examines whether or not the counterterrorism efforts across the world significantly deteriorated the human rights in those terror-stricken countries.
